Things to Do in Mt Fuji
The best things to do around Mt Fuji are the views from Lake Kawaguchiko and its ropeway, the Chureito Pagoda, the spring-fed ponds of Oshino Hakkai, and a soak in an onsen that faces the mountain. Hakone and Fuji-Q Highland are the two big add-ons. Nearly all of it works as a day trip from Tokyo: the highway bus from Busta Shinjuku to Lake Kawaguchiko costs about ¥2,200 (~USD 15) one way and takes about 1 hour 45 minutes.
The weather matters more than the transport. In long-term Fuji City records the cone is fully visible at 8am on roughly one day in two between November and February, and on only about one day in ten in summer, so a trip is won or lost on the morning. For the wider city picture, see the Tokyo destination guide.
Getting to Mt Fuji From Tokyo: The Short Version
The lowest-fare direct option is the highway bus from Busta Shinjuku to Lake Kawaguchiko, about ¥2,200 (~USD 15) one way and about 1 hour 45 minutes. The Fuji Excursion train costs ¥4,200 (~USD 28) with a reserved seat, and group tours cost more again. The weather rule fits in one line: check a live Fuji camera at about 5:30am and go only if the cone is clear. Fares are as of 2026, so confirm with the operator before you go.
Choosing between them? See the full bus, Fuji Excursion and tour comparison, with timetables, round-trip costs, the go or skip rule and a cloudy-day plan.
Best Time for Mt Fuji: Clear Months, Blossoms and Autumn Leaves
November to February is the clear-air season, and summer is the weakest. October looks like autumn but is a weak month for visibility. The events below bring crowds, not better odds of a clear cone.
- Cherry blossom. Around mid-April at Lake Kawaguchiko, with Chureito the most crowded spot and a cherry-lined stream at Oshino in mid to late April.
- Pink moss (shibazakura). The Fuji Shibazakura Festival at the Fuji Motosu Resort, near Lake Motosuko, runs from mid-April to late May or early June. In 2026 it ran 11 April to 24 May, with admission of ¥1,000 to 1,300 (~USD 7 to 9). A shuttle from Kawaguchiko Station takes about 40 minutes.
- Autumn leaves. Best around early to mid-November. The free Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival on the north shore is listed for 7 to 29 November in 2026, with the maple corridor lit after dark; dates change yearly.
Allow a spare day in any month so a cloudy morning can be swapped.
Lake Kawaguchiko: Lake Views and the Panoramic Ropeway
Lake Kawaguchiko is the default for a first visit. It is one leg of about two hours from Shinjuku with no transfer on the bus or the Fuji Excursion, and the cone rises directly behind the water. The convenience-store photo spot near Kawaguchiko Station has had screens and barriers in the past two years, so follow signage and do not cross the road for the shot.
North Shore and Oishi Park
North shore of Lake Kawaguchiko · free
The north shore faces the cone across the water. Oishi Park is a landscaped lakeside garden, always open, with flower beds that change by season. On a calm morning the lake can mirror the mountain, which is the reason to be here early. A 20-minute circular cruise runs about every 30 minutes for around ¥1,000 (~USD 7).
Mt Fuji Panoramic Ropeway
East shore, Kawaguchiko · about ¥1,000 to 1,200 (~USD 7 to 8) round trip
The ropeway climbs about 400 metres in a few minutes to an observation deck near the top of Mt Tenjo, with the lake below and Fuji beyond. The fare was ¥1,000 (~USD 7) round trip in late 2025, with a rise to ¥1,200 (~USD 8) reported from 1 November 2026. Wind can suspend service, and the forest trail down takes about 30 minutes. From Kawaguchiko Station it is about 15 minutes on the Omni Bus Red Line, or a 15 to 20 minute walk.
Chureito Pagoda at Arakurayama Sengen Park
Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi · free; Fujikyu Line to Shimo-Yoshida about ¥310 (~USD 2)
The red five-storey pagoda with Fuji behind it is the photograph most visitors have in mind. The park is free and open around the clock, and the viewing deck is reached by 398 steps, about 20 to 25 minutes from the station in total. From Kawaguchiko Station the Fujikyu Line takes 13 to 15 minutes to Shimo-Yoshida. The clearest views are on a morning from November to April. Skip the steps with young children or older relatives and use Oishi Park instead. Fujiyoshida cancelled its 2026 cherry blossom festival here because of overtourism, and timed entry to the deck has been reported in April, so check before you go.
The Fuji Five Lakes: Saiko, Yamanakako, Shojiko and Motosuko
Kawaguchiko is the easiest of the five and the only one most day trippers see. The others are quieter, need a bus or car, and sit a long way apart.
- Saiko. Lightly developed, with fishing, boating, and campsites. The Fuji view is partly blocked. The Omni Bus Green Line runs from Kawaguchiko Station about every 30 minutes.
- Yamanakako and Shojiko. Yamanakako is the largest, about 13 km around, with water sports. Shojiko is the smallest, with a few hotels and good fishing.
- Motosuko. The westernmost and the one with the best-known view; it appeared on the reverse of the former 1,000-yen note. Regular buses from Kawaguchiko take 30 to 45 minutes and cost about ¥1,470 (~USD 10) one way.
The Kawaguchiko Saiko Motosuko bus pass costs ¥1,500 (~USD 10) for one day, and the Fujiyoshida Oshino Yamanakako pass costs ¥1,800 (~USD 12).
Oshino Hakkai: Spring-Fed Ponds and Village Walk
Oshino, Yamanashi · allow about an hour
A thatched-roof village built around eight ponds fed by Fuji snowmelt filtered through lava, and a regular coach-tour stop of about an hour. The open-air museum around the largest pond, Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan, costs ¥300 (~USD 2). About one bus an hour from Kawaguchiko Station detours here, so check the timetable. It is pleasant in flat light, which makes it the best cloudy-day stop.
Onsen With Mt Fuji Views
Day-use baths let you soak with the cone in sight without a ryokan night. Prices are as listed in late 2025, so check before you go, and ask each facility about tattoo rules.
- Hotel Mifujien, Kawaguchiko. On the north-east shore, open to day visitors in the afternoon for ¥1,200 (~USD 8). Praised for its Fuji views, though the facilities are dated.
- Yurari, Saiko. ¥1,400 (~USD 9) on weekdays and ¥1,700 (~USD 11) on weekends, with Fuji views from the second-floor baths. Private mountain-view baths are ¥3,500 (~USD 23) for 60 minutes.
- Benifuji no Yu, Yamanakako. ¥900 (~USD 6), closed Tuesdays, and described as one of the best public baths for Fuji views.
Fuji-Q Highland
Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi · free entry; ride pass about ¥6,000 to 7,900 (~USD 40 to 53)
Entry to the park is free and you pay per ride or buy a pass, which makes sense once you plan on three or more coasters. The big four (Fujiyama, Eejanaika, Takabisha, and Zokkon) are ¥2,000 (~USD 13) each if bought singly, with height limits of 110 cm to 125 cm. Do-Dodonpa was retired in March 2024. The park is one stop from Kawaguchiko Station and about 1 hour 40 minutes by Shinjuku bus. It suits groups with teenagers more than anyone chasing the view. Pass prices are as reported, so check the official list.
Hakone With Mt Fuji: Owakudani, Lake Ashi and the Open-Air Museum
Kanagawa, east of Fuji · 2-day Hakone Free Pass about ¥7,100 (~USD 47) from Shinjuku; Romancecar seat surcharge about ¥1,100 to 1,200 (~USD 7 to 8)
Hakone is a circuit of ropeway, volcanic vents, and a lake boat, with Fuji across Lake Ashi on a clear day. The mountain is farther away than at Kawaguchiko, so Hakone is a good day out in its own right but a poor choice if Fuji is the only reason. The Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku takes about 75 to 90 minutes and costs ¥2,470 (~USD 16) one way, and the full loop takes roughly 5 to 7 hours.
- Owakudani. A volcanic valley of steam vents on the Hakone Ropeway, famous for black eggs cooked in the hot springs, about ¥500 (~USD 3) for five. The ropeway from Sounzan to Togendai has cost ¥2,000 (~USD 13) one way or ¥3,000 (~USD 20) round trip since October 2025. The ropeway has closed during past volcano warnings and runs replacement buses on some sections during scheduled maintenance, so check the official Hakone transport status page.
- Lake Ashi cruise. Sightseeing boats cross from Togendai to Moto-Hakone or Hakone-machi in 25 to 40 minutes, and the Free Pass covers them.
- Hakone Open-Air Museum. Outdoor sculpture and paintings, ¥2,000 (~USD 13) at the gate or ¥1,800 (~USD 12) online, open about 9:00 to 17:00.
- Onsen. Day-use baths in Yumoto start around ¥1,450 (~USD 10). The Hakone Green Plaza Hotel’s ¥1,600 (~USD 11) outdoor baths are among the few with a Fuji view on clear days.
The Free Pass from Odawara was ¥6,000 (~USD 40) for two days after the October 2025 revision, and the Shinjuku version adds the Odakyu round trip. To combine both areas, the Fuji Hakone Pass costs ¥11,100 (~USD 74) for three days and covers Hakone transport, Fuji Five Lakes transport, and the Tokyo round trip, which is a 2 to 3 day plan, not one day. The Hakone decision in a first-timer Japan itinerary covers day trip versus ryokan overnight.
Gotemba and Fujinomiya on the Shizuoka Side
Shizuoka, south-east of Fuji · Mt Fuji Romancecar ¥2,860 (~USD 19); buses about ¥1,800 to 2,200 (~USD 12 to 15)
Gotemba Premium Outlets has well over 200 stores and views of the mountain. The Mt Fuji Romancecar starts too late for a clear morning, so buses are the better way in. Treat Gotemba as a shopping-and-views day, not the best way to see Fuji.
Further round, Fujinomiya has Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha, the head shrine of Fuji worship and a traditional start for the climb. Shiraito Falls, a broad curtain of water, was reported free to view with a small parking fee. Both are reached by Tokaido Shinkansen to Mishima or Shin-Fuji, the line that continues to Kyoto’s temples and districts and Osaka’s food and sights, so this side suits a stop on the way west.
A One-Day Lake Kawaguchiko Plan
Take the earliest bus you can and do the lake and pagoda while the cone is most likely visible. Download offline maps first; which Japanese SIM or eSIM to buy covers staying connected.
- About 6:45 to 7:15. Bus from Busta Shinjuku. Some buses also stop at Shimo-Yoshida, near Chureito.
- About 8:30 to 10:30. North shore and Oishi Park, in the clearest hours.
- Late morning. Chureito, then back toward Kawaguchiko Station.
- Midday. Hoto, the thick miso noodle stew Yamanashi is known for; what to eat across Japan’s regions covers more.
- By about 4:30pm. Start the return.
If the cone is hidden, Oshino Hakkai, a long hoto lunch and an onsen all work in any weather, and Tokyo’s main sights, markets, and museums are the fallback.
Climbing Mt Fuji Is Not a Day Trip From Tokyo
The summit climb is a full day of walking on top of the journey from Tokyo, and the 2026 Yoshida Trail season ran from 1 July to 10 September and has closed. The fee is ¥4,000 (~USD 27), and the trailhead gate is closed from 2pm to 3am to anyone without a hut booking. In season the 5th Station is reachable by bus without climbing. Climbing is covered in the Fuji section of the Japan activities guide, and for planning beyond Fuji see the Japan destination guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month for a Mt Fuji day trip from Tokyo?
November to February is the clearest season, when the full cone is visible on roughly half of mornings at 8am in Fuji City records. Summer is the weakest, and October is a weak month for visibility, so allow a spare day in any month.
Can you climb Mt Fuji as a day trip from Tokyo?
No. The climb is a full day of walking on top of the journey from Tokyo, and the trailhead gate closes from 2pm to 3am to anyone without a hut booking. The 2026 Yoshida Trail season ran from 1 July to 10 September, with a fee of ¥4,000 (~USD 27).
What are the best things to do around Mt Fuji?
The best known are the lake views and Panoramic Ropeway at Lake Kawaguchiko, the Chureito Pagoda, Oshino Hakkai, and an onsen with a Fuji view. Hakone (Owakudani, the Lake Ashi cruise, the Open-Air Museum) and Fuji-Q Highland are the main add-ons, and Kawaguchiko is the easiest base from Tokyo.
How do you get to Chureito Pagoda and does it cost anything?
Take the Fujikyu Line from Kawaguchiko Station to Shimo-Yoshida, about 13 to 15 minutes and ¥310 (~USD 2), then walk. The park is free and open around the clock, and the viewing deck is reached by 398 steps. Expect heavy crowds, and possibly timed entry, in cherry blossom season.
Which onsen near Mt Fuji have views of the mountain?
Day-use baths with Fuji views include Hotel Mifujien at Kawaguchiko at about ¥1,200 (~USD 8), Yurari at Lake Saiko at about ¥1,400 (~USD 9) on weekdays, and Benifuji no Yu at Lake Yamanakako at about ¥900 (~USD 6), as listed in late 2025. Check hours and tattoo rules before you go.
Is Hakone or Lake Kawaguchiko better for seeing Mt Fuji?
Lake Kawaguchiko, because the cone rises directly behind the lake. Hakone views are from farther away, across Lake Ashi on a clear day, so go to Hakone for the ropeway, Owakudani, and the Open-Air Museum, and treat Fuji as a bonus.
Where to Stay Around Mt Fuji
Sleep in Shinjuku if you are doing the trip as a day out, since the highway bus terminal and the Fuji Excursion both leave from the Shinjuku Station area and the first bus leaves at about 6:45am and the first Fuji Excursion at about 7:30am. If the sky is the priority, an overnight at Lake Kawaguchiko gives you two morning chances at a clear cone instead of one, and a lakeside onsen hotel with a Fuji-view bath is part of the appeal. In Hakone, a ryokan overnight is the classic upgrade, at the price of a night out of the city. For the area-by-area breakdown, see where to stay in Tokyo by neighbourhood.
Flying to Tokyo for Mt Fuji
International flights land at Narita or Haneda, and the Fuji trip starts in Shinjuku, so there is no direct air route to Fuji. Put the day in the middle of your Tokyo stay, not on arrival or departure day, so a cloudy morning can be swapped for a clearer one. For airlines, fares, and which airport to pick, see flights to Tokyo and the main arrival airports.
