All Nippon Airways

Last updated

All Nippon Airways (ANA) is Japan’s largest airline, a Star Alliance member since 1999, and the flag carrier most closely tied to Tokyo’s two airports, Haneda and Narita. Its network combines Japan’s biggest domestic route map with long-haul service to Asia, North America, and Europe. This page covers cabin classes, baggage allowance, and where the route network actually reaches.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner Launch Customer ANA took delivery of the world's first 787 in September 2011 and remains its largest operator, with 34 787-8s and 44 787-9s in the fleet.
Exclusive Operator of the Flying Honu A380 All three of ANA's Airbus A380s, in blue, green, and orange sea-turtle liveries, fly exclusively between Tokyo Narita and Honolulu, the only route the aircraft serves.
Japan's Largest Domestic Network ANA Group serves more domestic Japan destinations than any other Japanese carrier, the natural onward connection from Haneda or Narita to cities like Osaka, Fukuoka, and Sapporo.

Who Should Fly ANA

  • Travelers building a multi-city Japan trip. ANA Group’s domestic network is the largest of any Japanese carrier, so a single ANA itinerary can connect an international arrival at Haneda straight onward to Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and dozens of other domestic airports without switching airlines.
  • Star Alliance travelers wanting status reciprocity. ANA Mileage Club Platinum status carries Star Alliance Gold, recognized across United, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, and every other Star Alliance member.
  • Travelers curious about the Flying Honu. ANA is the only airline flying the Airbus A380 to Honolulu, a distinctive four-class option on a route most competitors fly with a widebody twin-jet.
  • Business travelers connecting through Tokyo. ANA’s newest 777-300ERs carry “THE Room” business class and “THE Suite” first class, two of the most private premium cabins flying out of Asia, though only on a subset of routes, so check the aircraft before booking for the seat, not just the fare.

Routes and Hubs

ANA operates two hubs in Tokyo rather than one. Haneda (HND) handles the bulk of ANA’s domestic network and a growing share of international long-haul, prized for its proximity to central Tokyo; Narita (NRT) carries the rest of the international schedule, including the Flying Honu A380 to Honolulu. Which airport a given route uses depends on the destination and time slot, not a fixed rule, so always confirm HND vs NRT when booking. ANA does not fly nonstop to Bali. Travelers heading there connect via Singapore or Jakarta instead; for direct options see the Bali flight guide. Bangkok and Singapore are both flown nonstop from Tokyo. Both routes are shown in the chart below. Within Japan, ANA’s Haneda-based domestic network reaches Osaka and dozens of other cities. See the Japan travel guide for planning a multi-city itinerary.

The Fleet

ANA’s fleet splits cleanly between the widebody aircraft flying international and regional long-haul, and the narrowbody jets covering Japan’s domestic network. Aircraft type is tied to route length and cabin configuration, and only a subset of the 777 fleet carries ANA’s newest premium cabins.

Airbus A380 Narita–Honolulu only Exclusively "Flying Honu" livery, 3 aircraft built
Boeing 777-300ER Long-haul flagship routes Carries "THE Room" business & "THE Suite" first, select routes only
Boeing 787-8, -9 & -10 Medium to long-haul international Widebody; ANA was the Dreamliner's launch customer, 2011
Boeing 767-300ER Regional Asia-Pacific & domestic Mid-size widebody, two-class configuration
Boeing 737 & Airbus A320 family Domestic Japan network Narrowbody

Cabin Classes

ANA flies four cabins, but the newest Business and First products (“THE Room” and “THE Suite”) are only installed on a subset of Boeing 777-300ERs rolling out route by route, so which premium cabin is actually onboard depends on the aircraft assigned, not just the fare booked.

Fares and Flexibility

ANA sells international tickets under named fare brands, and the main thing separating them is not the seat but how freely the ticket can be changed or refunded. Value is the cheapest way to book a confirmed seat; Standard and Flex trade a higher price for more freedom to change plans.

Baggage Allowance

ANA’s checked baggage allowance is piece-based and scales with cabin class rather than a single flat weight limit for everyone. Here’s the shape of both carry-on and checked baggage:

Carry-on 1 bag plus 1 personal item, combined max 10kg. Bag max 55 × 40 × 25cm (L+W+H ≤115cm).
Checked Economy & Premium Economy: 2 bags up to 23kg each. Business: 2 bags up to 32kg each. First: 3 bags up to 32kg each. Max linear dimensions 158cm per bag.

Need more than the free allowance? Excess baggage can be prepaid online before departure at a lower rate than paying at the airport counter, with the exact per-bag or per-kilogram fee set by route and cabin. The only number worth trusting is the one for a specific booking. Check the official checked baggage page before flying.

Sports equipment and oversized items (surfboards, golf clubs, ski gear) are accepted but must be declared in advance rather than sorted out at check-in; the fee varies by item and route, but the advance-declare requirement doesn’t.

Check-in and at the Airport

ANA opens online check-in 24 hours before departure and keeps it open until 75 minutes before an international flight; airport counters open 3 hours out and close 60 minutes before departure. Here’s how the countdown to departure runs at the airport:

24h Online check-in opens
3h Airport counters open
1h 15m Online check-in closes

Tokyo hub — Haneda (HND) for most routes; Narita (NRT) for the Flying Honu A380 to Honolulu and select Asia routes

In-Flight Experience

ANA’s international cabins run on an “Inspiration of JAPAN” service concept, pairing Japanese and Western meal options with amenities sourced from Japanese brands. The seatback entertainment system carries a large library of movies, TV, and music, and wifi is available fleet-wide on long-haul aircraft, priced per flight or per day. On the Flying Honu A380, economy passengers on the upper deck get a dedicated snack bar, a feature unique to that aircraft.

Traveling with Children, Pets, and Special Needs

The policies that catch travelers out are the ones specific to who, or what, is flying with you. Here’s how ANA handles the common cases; arrange any of them when you book rather than at the airport.

  • Infants. Bassinet bulkhead seats can be requested for lap-infant bookings, and strollers can be gate-checked. Baby meals can be pre-ordered through ANA’s special meal request process.
  • Unaccompanied minors. Children aged 5–11 flying alone must use ANA’s Junior Pilot escort service; those 12–16 can use ANA Airport Support instead. Unaccompanied minors must travel on nonstop flights or same-day connections only. ANA does not accept them on itineraries requiring an overnight stay.
  • Special meals. Halal, vegetarian, dietary, and baby meals can all be pre-ordered on ANA-operated international flights departing Japan, ideally at least 24 hours before departure. ANA’s in-house catering service holds Halal certification rather than sourcing a pre-packaged meal.
  • Pets. ANA does not carry pets in the cabin; the only exception is a trained service dog traveling with a passenger with a disability. Cats, dogs, and select small animals can travel as checked baggage or air cargo instead, though short-nosed dog breeds aren’t accepted between May and October each year.
  • Reduced mobility. Wheelchair and special-assistance requests can be arranged in advance through ANA or your booking channel.
