Garuda Indonesia

Garuda Indonesia is Indonesia’s flag carrier and the only Indonesian airline in a global alliance, joining SkyTeam in 2014. For travelers connecting through Jakarta or flying direct into Bali, it’s usually the full-service option worth comparing against budget carriers before booking. Who Should Fly Garuda Indonesia

• Long-haul travelers from Europe. The nonstop Jakarta–Amsterdam route gives European travelers a one-connection path to Bali via Jakarta, without routing through a Middle East hub.
• Business travelers. SkyTeam elite reciprocity across partner airlines (Delta, Air France-KLM, Korean Air) makes status matching and lounge access straightforward on connecting itineraries.
• Families connecting through Jakarta. Included checked baggage and meal service matter more with kids in tow than shaving a fare down further.
• Travelers flying only within Indonesia on a budget. Garuda’s own low-cost subsidiary, Citilink, usually beats Garuda mainline fares on domestic routes, worth comparing before booking the flag carrier for a short island hop.

Routes and Hubs

Garuda operates two hubs: Soekarno-Hatta International (CGK) in Jakarta as the primary hub, and Ngurah Rai International (DPS) in Denpasar as a secondary base for Bali connections. International direct routes from Jakarta include Singapore, Tokyo Narita, Seoul Incheon, and Amsterdam, alongside seasonal Southeast Asian and Australian points. The Fleet

Garuda operates a mixed widebody and narrowbody fleet, with aircraft type tied closely to route length: widebodies on long-haul and trunk regional routes, narrowbodies and regional aircraft on domestic and feeder services.

Cabin Classes

Fares and Flexibility

Within each cabin Garuda sells several fare levels, and the main thing that separates them is not the seat. It’s how freely you can change or refund the ticket. The cheapest promotional fares trade that flexibility for the lower price.

Baggage Allowance

Garuda is standardizing checked baggage on a piece-based system from 1 September 2026. The allowance now follows cabin and route rather than a single weight limit. A ticket issued before that date keeps the allowance printed on it, so an older booking may not match the figures below. Here’s the shape of it:

Need more than the free allowance? Extra weight can be pre-purchased online in 5kg increments up to 40kg, and it’s consistently cheaper than paying excess baggage at the airport; Economy Comfort and Business fares get a further discount on top. Per-kilogram rates vary widely by route and cabin, so the only number worth trusting is Garuda’s own Excess Baggage Rate Calculator.

Sports and oversized items (surfboards, dive gear, golf clubs) are accepted but must be declared with Garuda in advance rather than sorted out at the airport; the fee varies, but the pre-booking requirement doesn’t.

Check-in and at the Airport

Garuda opens online check-in 48 hours out and keeps it open until about four hours before international flights (two hours for domestic). At its Jakarta hub everything runs through a single terminal, which keeps a domestic-to-international Garuda connection simple. Here’s how the countdown to departure runs at the airport:

In-Flight Experience

Widebody aircraft carry Garuda’s in-flight entertainment system with a solid regional film and TV library, seatback power on 777-300ER flights, and a meal service that leans Indonesian (nasi and satay options) alongside international choices. Wifi is available on select 777-300ER and A330-900 aircraft but is not fleet-wide, so don’t count on it for every route.

Traveling with Children, Pets, and Special Needs

The policies that catch travelers out are the ones specific to who, or what, is flying with you. Here’s how Garuda handles the common cases; arrange any of them when you book rather than at the airport.

• Infants (7 days–2 years). Travel on an adult’s lap or a booked seat; bassinets and baby meals are available on widebody aircraft but must be requested well ahead. An infant can’t travel as, or alongside, an unaccompanied minor.
• Children and unaccompanied minors. Garuda runs a paid unaccompanied-minor service, and a children’s meal can be requested for roughly ages 2–12.
• Special meals. Every Garuda meal is prepared halal by default, so there’s no need to request a halal option. Vegetarian, dietary, medical, religious, child, and baby meals can all be ordered in advance at no extra cost.
• Pets. Only trained service dogs travel in the cabin (free, with at least 48 hours’ notice). Other pets can’t fly in the cabin; on domestic flights under two hours they may go as checked baggage (up to 32kg including the crate, on direct flights only), while international pet transport is handled through Garuda Cargo.
• Reduced mobility. Wheelchair and special-assistance requests can be arranged in advance through Garuda or your booking channel.

Loyalty Program

GarudaMiles is Garuda Indonesia’s frequent flyer program, with four membership tiers (Blue, Silver, Gold, and Platinum) that layer on top of the airline’s SkyTeam membership. Gold carries SkyTeam Elite status and Platinum carries Elite Plus, both recognized across every SkyTeam member airline, not only Garuda.
