7 Days in Bali: First-Timer’s Itinerary

Last updated

Seven days in Bali (a temple loop, Nusa Penida island day trip, Ubud cooking class, and a Mount Batur sunrise trek) costs around USD 175–275 per person excluding accommodation and flights on a budget trip. This itinerary is built for first-time visitors keeping costs down: activities use shared tours or direct booking, meals default to warungs, and transport is arranged through accommodation or split across small groups.

Each day includes what to do, realistic timing, exactly what it costs, and what needs to be booked in advance. The route runs south to north: four nights in Seminyak or Canggu, three nights in Ubud, with the airport on both ends and no doubling back. Three things require advance booking: the Nusa Penida day trip (Day 3), the cooking class (Day 5), and the Mount Batur trek (Day 6). Everything else arranges on arrival. For background on the island (visas, transport, and what to expect), see Travel to Bali. For the full cost breakdown by tier, see Bali Travel Budget. Browse all our Bali travel tips for more planning guides.

Day 1: Arrive and Settle In

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is in south Bali. Seminyak is 20–30 minutes by private transfer; Canggu is 30–45 minutes. Both work as a first base. Seminyak is more central for the temple loop on Day 2; Canggu suits travellers after a surf and café atmosphere.

Keep Day 1 simple. Check in, eat at a warung near your accommodation, and walk to the beach for sunset. Most flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, and Perth arrive mid-morning or mid-afternoon, enough time to orient without rushing. For step-by-step arrival guidance (visa on arrival, immigration queues, SIM cards, and ATMs), see Bali Airport Guide.

  • Day cost (excl. accommodation): Warung dinner IDR 25,000–50,000. Budget USD 5–15 for food on arrival day.
  • Arrange tonight: Confirm a private driver for Day 2 through your accommodation. Day rate: IDR 400,000–600,000.

Day 2: Temples, Cliffs, and the Kecak Fire Dance

Day 2 covers Bali’s two most dramatic coastal temples, timed to avoid peak crowds: Tanah Lot in the morning and Uluwatu in the late afternoon, closing with the Kecak fire dance at sunset. A private driver is the right call. The temples are 75 minutes apart and the timing only works with flexible transport.

Morning: Tanah Lot

The offshore sea temple is best before tour buses arrive. Entry around IDR 60,000. Allow 60–90 minutes at the temple, then drive south toward Uluwatu.

Afternoon: Uluwatu Temple

A clifftop temple 70 metres above the Indian Ocean on the Bukit Peninsula. Arrive by 3pm to walk the cliff path before the performance begins. Monkeys throughout the complex will take phones, sunglasses, and food. Secure these before entering. Entry around IDR 50,000.

Evening: Kecak Fire Dance at Sunset

The traditional performance is held in the temple amphitheatre at sunset. Arrive 30 minutes early for a good seat. Around IDR 100,000. The combination of the performance, the cliffs, and the sun over the Indian Ocean is one of Bali’s defining experiences.

  • Day cost (excl. accommodation): Driver IDR 400,000–600,000 · temple entries around IDR 210,000 · meals IDR 80,000–150,000. Total around USD 35–55 per person (driver shared with one other traveller).
  • Book ahead: Nothing needs advance booking today. Confirm your driver the night before.

Day 3: Nusa Penida Island

Nusa Penida is the most dramatic island scenery near Bali: limestone cliffs, turquoise water, and the Kelingking Beach viewpoint. A full day and the most visually impressive day trip from south Bali. Fast boats leave from Sanur harbour (45 minutes east of Canggu) from around 7am; the crossing takes 45 minutes. To reach Sanur for the first departure, leave your south Bali accommodation by 6am.

Kelingking Beach

The clifftop viewpoint is the photographic highlight of the island. The descent to the beach below is steep and slippery. The view from the top is worth it without going down. Allow 45–60 minutes at this stop.

Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong

Natural rock arch and tidal pool formations, usually combined with Kelingking as the morning circuit. Plan 20–30 minutes at each.

Crystal Bay

The afternoon snorkelling stop: reef fish, turtles, and occasional manta ray sightings. Snorkel gear is usually included in the tour or available to rent at the bay.

  • Day cost (excl. accommodation): Full-day tour (fast boat + guide + island transport) IDR 450,000–650,000 per person. Lunch on the island IDR 50,000–100,000 extra. Total around USD 35–50.
  • Book ahead: 1–2 weeks in advance; 2–3 weeks in July–August. Boats and tours fill early. See Things to Do in Bali for platform options.

Day 4: Transfer to Ubud via Tegallalang

Check out of your south Bali accommodation mid-morning and take a private driver to Ubud with a stop at Tegallalang Rice Terraces on the way, one hour north of Canggu and 20 minutes south of Ubud, a natural midpoint break on the 90-minute transfer.

Tegallalang Rice Terraces

The most photographed landscape in Bali. Mid-morning timing means arriving after the early-morning crowds. A small fee applies at most viewing platforms (IDR 10,000–25,000 per platform). Allow 45–60 minutes to walk between platforms.

Arrive Ubud

Check in, eat lunch, and walk the Ubud market in the afternoon, a strip of stalls along the main road through town. Good for orientation more than shopping on first arrival. Ubud has a strong café and restaurant scene at every price point. See Where to Eat in Bali for warung picks and café recommendations.

  • Day cost (excl. accommodation): Private driver IDR 300,000–450,000 · Tegallalang entries IDR 10,000–25,000 · lunch and dinner IDR 80,000–200,000. Total around USD 30–55 per person.
  • Book ahead: Confirm your driver the night before. Book Ubud accommodation before the trip. Boutique properties and jungle lodges sell out in peak season.

Day 5: Campuhan Ridge Walk, Tirta Empul, and a Cooking Class

Three Ubud experiences in a logical sequence: a free morning ridge walk before the heat builds, a mid-morning holy spring temple, and an afternoon cooking class.

For the full range of what to do in Ubud across multiple days, see Things to Do in Ubud.

Morning: Campuhan Ridge Walk

A 9km walk through jungle and rice paddies starting from central Ubud. Free, no guide needed, and almost empty before 8am. The best free activity in Bali. Allow 2–2.5 hours at a relaxed pace.

Mid-morning: Tirta Empul

A holy spring temple 15 minutes north of Ubud where Balinese Hindus perform ritual purification bathing. Visitors may enter the pools respectfully. Bring a change of clothes. A sarong is required and available to borrow at the entrance. Entry around IDR 50,000. Allow 60–90 minutes.

Afternoon: Balinese Cooking Class

The best classes start with a market visit, cook 5–6 dishes in a family compound, and finish with eating what you made. Classes run 3–4 hours. Cost IDR 350,000–500,000 per person including the market visit and recipe card.

  • Day cost (excl. accommodation): Ridge walk free · Tirta Empul IDR 50,000 · cooking class IDR 350,000–500,000. Total around USD 25–40 per person.
  • Book ahead: Cooking class: 3–5 days ahead; 1–2 weeks in July–August. Small group sizes mean slots fill quickly.

Day 6: Mount Batur Sunrise (2am Start)

The Mount Batur sunrise trek is the most demanding day on this itinerary and one of the most rewarding. You hike an active volcano in the dark, reach the crater rim before dawn, and watch the sun rise over a caldera lake with Mount Agung on the horizon. The 2am start is non-negotiable. Keep the afternoon free.

2am: Departure from Ubud

Your driver picks you up for the 1-hour drive to the trailhead at Kintamani. You meet your guide and begin the 2-hour hike to the crater rim. Bring a warm layer; the summit is 10–15°C cooler than Ubud and wind before dawn is cold. A headtorch is essential; most guides provide them.

Summit (around 6am)

Sunrise from the crater rim with the caldera lake below and Mount Agung behind it. Breakfast is cooked using volcanic steam, typically eggs and bananas. Allow 45–60 minutes at the top before the descent.

Back in Ubud (10–11am)

Rest, eat a proper breakfast, and keep the afternoon unscheduled. A traditional Balinese massage (IDR 80,000–150,000 for 60 minutes) is the obvious recovery option and widely available in Ubud.

  • Day cost (excl. accommodation): Trek with guide IDR 350,000–550,000 (includes summit breakfast) · return transfer IDR 150,000–200,000 · optional massage IDR 80,000–150,000. Total around USD 40–65 per person.
  • Book ahead: 1 week minimum; 2–3 weeks in July–August. Use a registered trekking agency. Confirm the guide is licensed at Kintamani.

Day 7: Final Morning and Airport Transfer

Allow 90 minutes from Ubud to the airport for a midday or afternoon departure. Add 30 minutes during peak traffic hours (7–9am) or school holidays. For an early morning flight, consider staying near the airport in Kuta or Seminyak the night before.

Morning Options

The Ubud market opens early and is the best spot for final shopping: batik, silver jewellery, carved wood, and locally roasted coffee. See Bali Souvenirs for what is worth buying and how to negotiate a fair price. If you skipped the Campuhan Ridge Walk on Day 5, it is 2–2.5 hours and fits a midday or later departure.

Airport Transfer

Private driver from Ubud IDR 250,000–400,000. Confirm the night before and ask for a realistic time estimate. Local drivers know the traffic on the Ubud–Denpasar road.

  • Day cost: Transfer IDR 250,000–400,000 · breakfast and shopping variable. Budget USD 20–35 for the morning.

Total Cost for 7 Days

Per person estimates excluding accommodation and international flights. Accommodation adds USD 15–40 per night budget or USD 50–120 per night mid-range.
