Bangkok Rabbit Card

Last updated

The Rabbit Card is Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain stored-value card. Tap in, tap out, no queuing at ticket machines between journeys. Under Thailand’s 2025 AML regulations, buying a Rabbit Card now requires your passport, so carry it to the BTS counter on your first day in the city.

How to Buy a Rabbit Card

Rabbit Cards are sold at the customer service counter on the ground floor of any BTS Skytrain station, at the staffed booth near the ticket machines, not the automated machines themselves. You will need:

  • Your passport
  • An email address and phone number for registration
  • THB 200 cash: THB 100 non-refundable card fee + THB 100 loaded stored value

The process takes around five minutes. The card is ready to use immediately.

Getting the Card from the Airport

Neither Bangkok airport has a BTS counter on-site. Your first card purchase happens after you leave the airport.

  • Suvarnabhumi (BKK). take the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai station (around THB 45, 30 minutes), then buy your Rabbit Card at the BTS customer service counter inside Phaya Thai. If you pre-ordered via Klook or KKday, collect the card at the Klook booth in the Suvarnabhumi arrivals basement before boarding the ARL.
  • Don Mueang (DMK). no direct BTS connection from this airport. Take bus A1 or Grab to Mo Chit BTS station, then buy your card at the counter there.

Pre-Ordering Online

Klook and KKday both offer Rabbit Cards for pre-order with collection at Suvarnabhumi Airport on arrival. Pre-ordered cards typically come loaded with THB 200 stored value for a total cost of around THB 290, with more stored value than the in-person purchase for a slightly higher upfront cost. No card fee charged separately. Worth considering if you want the card ready the moment you clear customs.

How to Top Up

Top-up machines are positioned at every BTS station alongside the regular ticket machines. They accept Thai Baht notes only; no coins, no cards. Minimum top-up is THB 100, in multiples of THB 100. Maximum stored balance is THB 4,000.

You can also top up at the customer service counter. For first-time top-ups after purchase, some counters may request your passport again. Carry it on your first few trips.

Rabbit Card vs One-Day Pass

BTS also sells a One-Day Pass (THB 150) for unlimited rides on the day of purchase. For a single busy day on the Skytrain it offers better value; the Rabbit Card suits everyone staying longer.

What the Card Covers

The Rabbit Card works on:

  • BTS Skytrain. both the Sukhumvit Line and Silom Line throughout Bangkok
  • Chao Phraya Tourist Boat. the river ferry service along the Chao Phraya
  • Selected retail partners. convenience stores, coffee chains, and food outlets at and around BTS stations displaying the Rabbit logo

The card does not work on the MRT (Blue, Purple, or Yellow lines), the Airport Rail Link, or the Red Line. Each runs its own separate payment system.

Navigating the BTS Network

  • Siam is the hub. the Sukhumvit and Silom lines cross at Siam; changing between them is a free interchange, no second tap needed
  • Asok / Sukhumvit interchange. Asok BTS and Sukhumvit MRT Blue Line connect via a covered walkway; you exit the BTS paid zone and pay a separate fare on the MRT with a different card or token
  • Mo Chit. northern terminus of the Sukhumvit Line; walking distance from Chatuchak Weekend Market and connected to MRT Chatuchak Park
  • Fares. from around THB 17 to THB 59 depending on distance; Rabbit Card fares are identical to single-journey ticket prices, so the saving is time, not money

On the Platform and Train

  • Last trains. the final services from central stations like Siam depart around midnight, reaching the end of each line by approximately 12:45am. Check the departure board if you are travelling late; missing the last train means a Grab home.
  • Air conditioning. BTS carriages run very cold air conditioning. A light layer in your bag makes long rides significantly more comfortable, particularly for children.
  • Durian. durian fruit is strictly prohibited on all BTS trains and platforms. If you have just bought some at Chatuchak or a market, finish it before entering the station or arrange separate transport for it.

Refunds, Validity, and Lost Cards

  • Card fee. the THB 100 card fee is permanently non-refundable
  • Stored value refund. balances of THB 250 or less are refunded in cash on the spot at any BTS customer service counter; balances above THB 250 take up to 15 business days to process
  • Card validity. the physical card is valid for 7 years from issue; stored value stays active for 2 years after your last transaction, then automatically restores the next time you top up, with no counter visit required
  • Repeat visits. worth keeping for return trips; top it up and it works immediately even if the stored value expired between visits
  • Lost or stolen. the Rabbit Card functions like cash; a lost card cannot be cancelled or replaced, and the balance is unrecoverable. Keep it in a secure pocket.
