Bali Visa Guide: e-VOA, the 30-Day Limit and Extensions
Most visitors to Bali need a visa on arrival (VOA), which gives 30 days and can be extended once for another 30. You can get it two ways: apply online before you fly (the e-VOA) or pay at the visa counter at Ngurah Rai airport after you land. Passport holders from ASEAN countries, and a short list of others, enter visa-free for up to 30 days with no extension.
The online route is the one the guides we checked recommend, because it skips the counter queue and lets you fix mistakes from home. Everything here is guidance as of October 2026, and Indonesian immigration changes its rules often, so confirm your eligibility on the official Indonesian e-visa portal before you book. For the rest of your planning, start with the Bali destination guide.
Bali Visa Quick Answer: Who Needs One and Who Is Exempt
- Visa-free. ASEAN passport holders get up to 30 days with no visa. Indonesia’s official tourism site also lists Brazil, Colombia, Hong Kong, Peru, Suriname and Türkiye, and press reports say a July 2026 regulation added Kazakhstan, Macau and Belarus. The list has changed several times since 2024, so check your own passport. The free stay cannot be extended or converted into another visa, and it depends on the nationality of your passport, not where you live.
- VOA or e-VOA. More than 85 nationalities, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and EU countries, can use the visa on arrival or its online twin. It gives 30 days, is single-entry, and can be extended once.
- Neither list. You need a different visa, applied for before you fly.
One rule applies to everyone: your passport must be valid for at least six months from the day you arrive, with a blank page for the stamp or sticker. Airlines check it before boarding.
Bali e-VOA vs Visa on Arrival at the Airport
Both routes produce the same visa: 30 days, one entry. What differs is when you pay and where you queue.
| e-VOA (online) | Visa on arrival (counter) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | evisa.imigrasi.go.id, from home | Visa counter in the arrivals hall at Ngurah Rai, before the immigration desks |
| When | Before you fly; apply at least two working days ahead | On the day you land |
| Payment | Visa, Mastercard or JCB card, online | Rupiah cash is the safe choice; card acceptance is reported to vary |
| What you carry | Approval PDF with QR code, printed or saved offline | Passport, onward ticket, accommodation address |
| Queues | Skip the visa counter and join the immigration desks | Two queues: the counter, then immigration |
The e-VOA is approved by email, anywhere from a few hours to a few working days, so do not leave it to the night before. Guides report that the approval is usable for about 90 days after it is issued, but the 30-day stay only starts when you enter. Check the validity printed on your approval, and double-check the passport number you type, because a typo means starting again. One online application can cover up to five travelers. Use only addresses ending in .go.id.
The fee is set by immigration and changes, so this page does not repeat it. In August 2026 the Director General of Immigration floated a rise that would charge more on arrival than online, and as of our October 2026 check we found no start date announced. Read the amount on the portal before you pay. At peak hours the counter alone can add 30 to 45 minutes, which is why many travelers pay online.
If your passport has the chip symbol, ask about the automatic immigration gates. Bali’s immigration office opened Ngurah Rai’s autogates to foreigners with an electronic passport and an e-VOA in 2024, though availability can change.
The 30-Day Limit and How to Extend Your Bali Visa Once
- The day count. The stay runs 30 days from landing, and the day you arrive counts as day one. Two guides give the example that a 1 April landing runs to 30 April. Read the date on your stamp or approval rather than counting yourself.
- One extension only. A VOA or e-VOA can be extended once, by 30 days, for a maximum of 60. There is no second extension, and a visa-free ASEAN stay cannot be extended at all.
- File before day 30. An immigration office guide says the online request can be opened 14 days before expiry and filed as late as the day before. Start a week or two earlier. The office visit comes after the online step, offices close on public holidays, and Nyepi falls on Monday 8 March 2027.
The process runs in five steps:
- Find your permit online. Sign in to the e-visa portal and open your existing stay permit under Services, then choose Extend.
- Enter your Bali address. Type the address and postal code exactly. The system uses them to assign the immigration office you visit.
- Upload and pay. Attach the documents requested, including a ticket out of Indonesia, and pay online. Check the fee on the portal.
- Visit the office. Since 29 May 2025 (Circular Letter IMI-417.GR.01.01 of 2025), extensions include an in-person photo, fingerprints and short interview, and the rule covers VOA holders. Guides report going within one to two working days of paying. Elderly, pregnant and disabled visitors and nursing mothers can be helped at the counter on a walk-in basis.
- Receive it by email. The extension is sent to the address you registered.
Bali has several immigration offices, including Ngurah Rai in Jimbaran, Denpasar and Singaraja. The Ngurah Rai immigration office website lists extension services in the morning and photo sessions until mid-afternoon on weekdays, but hours change, so check before you go. Dress neatly and wear closed shoes: one office’s guidance says flip-flops are not admitted.
Licensed agents can handle the online filing for a fee. The photo visit stays personal, so an agent saves paperwork, not the trip. A VOA also cannot be converted into another visa inside Indonesia.
Overstaying a Bali Visa: What the Rules Say
An overstay starts the day after your permit period ends, and the rules are administrative and the same for every nationality. Two cases matter:
- Up to 60 days over. A charge of IDR 1,000,000 (~USD 60) per day applies, as of 2026. The rate comes from Government Regulation 28 of 2019 and appeared in a Bali immigration statement in August 2026. Denpasar immigration said in 2024 that visitors who pay are not given a deportation stamp.
- Unable to pay, or over 60 days. The consequence is deportation and an entry ban. Bali immigration described bans of up to six months, renewable in six-month steps. People awaiting deportation can be held at an immigration detention center for a week or two, according to Antara reports of cases in 2024 and 2026.
The simplest protection is the calendar. Put your expiry date in your phone with a reminder two weeks earlier, and either file the extension or book your flight out from there. Amounts and rules can change, so confirm them with Indonesian immigration.
Bali Entry Checklist: What to Have Before You Fly
- Passport. Valid six months from arrival, with a blank page, as above. Children and babies need their own.
- Visa. Your e-VOA approval, saved offline, or cash ready for the counter. Each traveler needs one, babies included, according to the guides we checked.
- Onward ticket. Indonesian rules call for a ticket out of the country. Officers do not always ask, but airlines sometimes check at your departure airport. Book a flight that leaves inside your permitted stay, and a flexible fare keeps the option to extend. For fares and carriers, see which airlines fly to Bali.
- Accommodation address. The e-VOA form and the arrival card both ask for it.
- All Indonesia Arrival Card. Free, online at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id, up to 72 hours before landing. It is separate from the visa, and the Bali airport arrivals steps explain the form, including the luggage field.
- Tourist levy. A separate provincial charge of IDR 150,000 (~USD 10) per foreign visitor, as of 2026, paid on LoveBali. How to pay the Bali tourist levy has the steps.
- Budget line. Add the visa, the levy and any extension to the one-off costs in the full Bali trip budget.
A visa on arrival covers tourism, visiting family and attending meetings. It does not allow paid work for Indonesian clients.
Lombok, the Gilis and Leaving Indonesia: Do You Need Another Bali Visa?
Lombok and the Gili Islands are part of Indonesia, so a day trip or a few nights there is a domestic move inside the same permit period, and your 30-day clock keeps running while you are away. Nusa Penida is part of Bali.
Leaving Indonesia is different. A VOA or e-VOA is single-entry, so a weekend in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur ends it, and coming back means a new application and a fresh entry. Repeated back-to-back entries can draw questions at the desk, and a new visa is not a substitute for an extension.
Staying Longer Than 60 Days in Bali
The VOA tops out at 60 days. For three or four months, or for working remotely, you need a different visa applied for before you fly. Visa options for long stays and remote work compares the main routes and what each allows. More practical guides sit under Bali Travel Tips.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a visa to visit Bali?
Most visitors do. ASEAN passport holders and a short list of other nationalities enter visa-free for up to 30 days, and most other nationalities use a visa on arrival or an e-VOA. Confirm yours on the official Indonesian immigration portal.
Is the Bali e-VOA better than the visa on arrival at the airport?
They are the same 30-day visa. The e-VOA is applied for and paid online before you fly, so you skip the visa counter and go straight to the immigration desks. At the counter, bring rupiah cash, because card acceptance is reported to vary.
How long can I stay in Bali on a visa on arrival?
You can stay 30 days from the day you land, and the arrival day counts as day one. One extension of another 30 days is allowed, for a maximum of 60 days.
How do I extend my Bali visa?
File online at evisa.imigrasi.go.id, then visit an immigration office for a photo, fingerprints and a short interview. File before the first 30 days end, and start a week or two early.
Can I extend a visa-free stay in Bali?
No. The 30-day visa-free stay for ASEAN passport holders and the other listed nationalities cannot be extended or converted into another visa.
What happens if I overstay my Bali visa?
As of 2026, up to 60 days over carries a charge of IDR 1,000,000 (~USD 60) per day. If you cannot pay, or you are more than 60 days over, the result is deportation and an entry ban.
Do I need another visa for a day trip to Lombok or the Gili Islands?
No. Lombok and the Gili Islands are part of Indonesia, so the trip is domestic and your permit period keeps running. Leaving Indonesia ends a single-entry VOA.
Can I enter Indonesia more than once on a visa on arrival?
No. A VOA or e-VOA is single-entry. If you leave Indonesia you need a new visa on return, and repeated entries can draw questions at the immigration desk.
Do children need their own visa for Bali?
Yes, according to the guides we checked, every traveler including infants needs their own visa and passport. One e-VOA application can cover up to five travelers.
Do I need an onward ticket to enter Bali?
Indonesian rules call for a ticket out of the country. Officers do not always ask, but airlines sometimes check, so book a flight that leaves inside your permitted stay.
