Hotels in Bali
Bali looks small on a map and drives large. The airport is the fixed point: Seminyak is 10 km away, Uluwatu 21 to 23 km, Ubud 36 to 40 km, and the hour you spend in the car depends more on traffic than on distance. Pick the area that matches your plans for the week and most of the rest follows. For transport options, airport arrival and a full destination overview, see the Bali travel guide.
The Case for a Split Stay: Ubud Plus the Coast
Under five nights, one base and day trips is the simpler plan. From a week up, two or three nights in Ubud plus the rest on the south coast gives you the cultural interior and the beach-and-dining scene in one trip. Ubud is the far leg: the airport run is 36 to 40 km and takes 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic, as of November 2026. Put the Ubud nights early in the trip, and keep the night before an early flight on the coast. A hotel can usually book the transfer between your two properties at a fixed price. Couples planning a honeymoon can see how to split honeymoon nights between bases.
Uluwatu sits at the other end of the island’s traffic: 21 to 23 km from the airport, so a Uluwatu base plus a Seminyak dinner means a long drive home. Match the base to where you plan to spend your evenings.
Seminyak: 10 km From the Airport
Seminyak is the most polished of the southern neighbourhoods. Petitenget and Seminyak beaches are both walkable from the main strip, and the area holds the island’s densest cluster of private pool villas and mid-range boutique hotels. It draws couples, honeymooners and first-time visitors who want a serviced beach base with restaurants within a few minutes’ walk. For what to do once you are there, see the Seminyak guide to walkable streets, spas and sunset.
The northern end around Petitenget and Batubelig is quieter and villa-dominated. The southern end runs into Legian and then Kuta, which is younger, louder and cheaper, and the closest of the three to the airport. That makes Kuta a sensible one-night stop on arrival or departure. For the long stay, book in Seminyak proper. The villa compound The Layar, on Jalan Pangkung Sari, shows the local format: 23 villas, each with a private pool and between 1 and 4 bedrooms, according to the property’s own site. For a street-by-street comparison of the walkable strip, the beach end and the quiet villa lanes, see where to stay in Seminyak.
Canggu: Batu Bolong, Berawa and Pererenan
Canggu splits into three areas, and a search for “hotels in Canggu” blends all of them.
- Batu Bolong. The original core, with Echo Beach, the surf cafés and the densest cluster of restaurants and bars. Choose it if you want to step out of the door into the scene.
- Berawa. North of Batu Bolong and more upscale: larger villas, some five-star properties and Finns Beach Club. Quieter streets suit couples who want the scene nearby but not underneath their window.
- Pererenan. The quietest of the three, with rice fields at the edges, fewer restaurants and lower villa rates. It suits longer stays and remote workers.
Late-afternoon traffic backs up on the roads in and around Canggu, so the drive to Seminyak for dinner is the part of the day to plan around. For a fuller breakdown of the areas, prices and what to check before booking, see our guide to hotels in Canggu.
Ubud: 36 to 40 km Inland
Ubud has no beach and a calmer pace than the coast, set among rice terraces and jungle valleys. Allow 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours from the airport, as of November 2026.
Hotels split into two types. Landscape properties are built around the terrain, with infinity pools over rice paddies and open-air pavilions where the view is the reason for the stay. Central Ubud hotels put the market, the galleries and the restaurants within walking distance. Pick central if you plan to go out on foot at night, and landscape if you will spend long hours at the property.
Ubud is also the island’s retreat and wellness hub, and yoga studios and cooking classes are built into the hotel scene. Desa Seni Baturiti, in the Tabanan highlands, takes the idea further: a village of reclaimed antique Indonesian houses with a daily yoga programme. It is the second Desa Seni property, after the original in Canggu. For a fuller breakdown of the areas, prices and what to check before booking, see our guide to hotels in Ubud.
Uluwatu and the Bukit: 21 to 23 km South
The Bukit Peninsula sits on layers of limestone at the southern tip of Bali. Expect clifftop villas with Indian Ocean views, surf breaks at Padang Padang and Bingin, and a fraction of the commercial density found to the north. For what to do there, see the Uluwatu temple and cliff beach guide.
Padang Padang, Bingin, Balangan and Ungasan differ by stairs, tides and noise, and where to stay in Uluwatu compares them. The trade-off is logistics: restaurants outside your property need a car or scooter, and nothing is walkable in the usual sense. The Bukit suits couples after a self-contained stay in a dramatic setting.
Some of the best-positioned clifftop properties sit at the end of steep, narrow lanes. Before you book, message the property and ask where a car has to stop and how many steps remain to your room, then compare the answer to the bags you are bringing.
Nusa Dua and Jimbaran
These two areas share the southeastern coast and serve different guests.
Nusa Dua is Bali’s resort enclave, with wide roads, manicured beachfront and large international brands. The Mulia is the example to know: its own site describes a three-resort compound on Geger Beach, with The Mulia (all suites, beachfront), Mulia Resort (several pools, wide facilities) and Mulia Villas (all pool villas). Families and guests who want everything on one site tend to pick this zone.
Jimbaran lies south of the airport and has its own bay. Its beach restaurants serve grilled seafood at tables on the sand at dusk, and its resort scene is calmer than Nusa Dua’s. It works as a base for a first or last night.
Sanur: 30 to 45 Minutes From the Airport, 45 Minutes to Nusa Penida
Sanur is the older, quieter east-coast beach town, set apart from the nightlife and traffic of the main tourist strip. It suits families and travellers who want a beach base without Seminyak’s congestion. The airport is a 30 to 45 minute drive.
Sanur is also the departure point for fast boats to Nusa Penida (45 minutes per nusapenida.org and Direct Ferries, as of November 2026) and Nusa Lembongan. With an early boat, a night in Sanur at either end of the island trip saves a long pre-dawn drive. To sleep on Nusa Penida itself, where to stay on Nusa Penida by boat landing and drive time compares the island’s areas.
Types of Accommodation in Bali
- Private pool villas. Bali’s signature category. The economics improve with every guest you add: a villa at USD 200 per night costs USD 100 per person for two and USD 50 per person for four, before tax and service. For how villa pricing works, where to book and what to check in listings, see renting a villa in Bali.
- Boutique hotels. Independently owned, design-led and small. Ubud has the highest concentration, and Seminyak and Canggu both have strong selections.
- Resort hotels. Large branded properties with pools, spas and several restaurants, concentrated in Nusa Dua and Seminyak. Choose one if you want to stay inside the property for most of the day.
- Guesthouses and losmen. Family-run and simple, often with breakfast included. They are the base of budget travel in Bali, particularly in Ubud and Canggu.
Understanding Bali Hotel Pricing: The 21% Add-On
Many Bali hotels quote a rate with “++”, which means tax and service charge are added at checkout. The combined add-on reaches 21%, according to Bali news site The Bali Sun and the Jakarta100Bars tax guide, as of November 2026. A room listed at USD 80 per night can therefore reach USD 96.80, and a five-night stay moves from USD 400 to USD 484. Look for “++” or the words “plus tax and service” in the listing, and compare the final total on the booking page instead of the nightly headline.
Smaller properties sometimes publish net rates too. Desa Seni’s own site lists IDR 3,052,500 (~USD 188) for a single and IDR 3,877,500 (~USD 238) for a double per night, net of tax and service. A foreign guest also pays the Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000 (~USD 10) per person through the official Love Bali site by bank transfer, virtual account or QRIS, and the voucher arrives by email.
Compare Booking.com and Agoda for the same room on the same dates, and add up the final total on each. Boutique properties and small villas sometimes list on only one.
When to Book Hotels in Bali: School Holidays and Nyepi
Australian school holidays set the July crunch. In 2027 they run from 26 June to 11 July in Queensland, 3 to 18 July in Western Australia and 5 to 16 July in New South Wales, as of November 2026. Book Seminyak and Ubud properties with limited rooms before those windows open.
The calendar date that changes plans most is Nyepi, the Day of Silence. In 2027 it falls on Monday 8 March, according to Indonesia’s national holiday decree. The airport closes for the full 24 hours, and in 2026 that closure ran from 6am on Thursday 19 March to 6am on Friday 20 March. Guests stay inside their hotel grounds, and many hotels run a dinner programme for the evening. If your check-in or check-out lands on that day, ask the hotel to hold your room for an extra night or move the transfer before it begins. Our Nyepi guide covers how hotels handle it.
What to Look For When Booking
- Private or shared pool. Ask how many rooms or villas use the pool. One means private, and anything above one means shared.
- Room category with the view. Rice terrace photos on Ubud listings often belong to one room category. Match the category name in the booking to the photo caption.
- Airport transfer. Add it at booking if the property offers it. For Ubud the fixed price covers a drive of 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours.
- Breakfast. Guesthouses usually include it, and larger hotels often charge for it. Subtract or add the cost when you compare totals.
- Air conditioning. Some budget guesthouses use fans only. Look for “AC” in the room amenities before you book.
