Hotels in Uluwatu

The best place to stay in Uluwatu comes down to one trade: walk to coffee, or sleep above the surf and ride for everything else. Padang Padang along Jalan Labuan Sait is the most walkable base. Bingin and Suluban put you at the top of cliff stairs above the breaks, Balangan is the quiet end, and Pecatu and Ungasan are villa and resort country where every outing is a ride. Uluwatu is the southwest tip of the Bukit Peninsula, about 40 to 55 minutes from Bali’s airport, and most of it is not walkable between areas.

Which cliff or beach you sleep near decides your tide, stair, noise and scooter problems more than the star rating does. Almost all stays are small: homestays, surf camps, boutique hotels and private pool villas, plus a short list of large clifftop resorts. For how Uluwatu compares with the rest of the island, see our guide to hotels in Bali.

Choosing Your Area in Uluwatu

Start with cliff or beach. The coast here is a limestone cliff of roughly 30 to 100 metres, so a stay is either on top, looking down at the sea, or reached by stairs down to a surf village. Cliff-top stays have the view, the pool and often a lift or a driveway, and need a ride to any beach. Stays beside the beach staircases are close to the surf and the warungs, and you pay with the climb back up carrying a suitcase. The tide never changes your room, only your beach time: guides report that Suluban’s sand mostly disappears at mid and high tide, while Melasti’s sand is best at low tide.

Area Walk to food Beach access Night noise Ride needed
Padang Padang (Labuan Sait) Yes, near the beach end Rock-gap stairway to the cove Busiest strip; some DJ nights For beaches beyond the cove
Bingin Yes, a few cafes Steep stairs, about 180 to 190 steps Mostly quiet; construction Yes
Suluban and the temple side Cliff cafes and bars Stairs and a cave passage Sunday DJ sunsets, club traffic Yes
Balangan Few options Gentle slope, a few steps Quiet, early nights Yes, own scooter or car
Pecatu Rarely Varies; often steep stairs Quiet inland, loud near cliff clubs Yes
Ungasan and Melasti Rarely Resort lifts; Melasti by road Quiet; sunset traffic Yes, a car is easier
  • Padang Padang and Labuan Sait. The nearest thing to a town centre, with the cafes and surf shops strung along Jalan Labuan Sait. The road is long and hilly, so a room near the beach end walks to breakfast and a room up the hill does not. It suits first-timers, families and anyone without a scooter. The catch is traffic and crowds, thin walls in some budget homestays, and one 2026 guide reports a venue here running DJ parties until 2am.
  • Bingin. A surf village of narrow lanes, homestays and a few cafes above a reef break, with a steep walk of about 10 minutes down to the sand. It suits surfers and couples who want low-key evenings. Many stays are reached by steps or a steep path, and one guide says several smaller luxury stays here and in Balangan are adults only, so check if you travel with children. The 2025 demolitions changed the beachfront, covered under booking-time practicalities below.
  • Suluban and the temple side. The best-known stretch, with Uluwatu Temple, the Single Fin cliff bar and the cave route down to the surf. It is lively and young rather than quiet, and Single Fin is reported to run DJ sets on Sunday sunsets. In return you are the closest to the Kecak and the sunset, and one 2026 guide notes that staying near the temple avoids the sunset crawl along the temple road. Prices here run to the top of the range.
  • Balangan. The quietest neighbourhood, a villa area with big gardens and a beach still lined with local warungs, with Dreamland a few minutes away. It is cheaper than Bingin or Padang Padang in the one 2026 price list we found, and the slope to the sand is gentler than at the cliff beaches. You will want your own scooter or a driver, because ride apps are limited and central Uluwatu is about 30 minutes away by road, as one guide puts it.
  • Pecatu. A village name that covers a wide stretch of inland plots and cliffs, so listings with a Pecatu address can be near Bingin, on Labuan Sait or 15 to 20 minutes from any beach. Check the map pin rather than the name. Expect large villas with private pools, easy family space, and cliff clubs such as Savaya and El Kabron whose parties carry. Inland Pecatu is among the cheaper bases and the least convenient.
  • Ungasan and Melasti. The east side of Uluwatu, with a residential Ungasan of everyday warungs and, on the clifftops, the luxury resorts. Guides report that Bvlgari and Karma Kandara reach their beaches by a funicular or inclined lift, and The Ungasan has an inclinator down to Sundays Beach Club. It suits honeymooners, families who want Melasti’s calmer water, and anyone content to stay inside a resort. It is the most isolated area, so plan on a car and expect rush-hour traffic.

Nyang Nyang is a beach, not a place to stay, and the few stays near it are remote. Uluwatu is also hard to use as a base for the rest of Bali: the drive to Canggu runs 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes and to Ubud 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes in our Bali transport times and fares, longer at sunset. It works best as a two to three night stop or a surf base. If you want walkable cafes and nightlife, Canggu’s hotel areas fit better, and Seminyak by street is the other walkable south-coast option.

Types of Places to Stay in Uluwatu

  • Surf camps and hostels. Dorm beds and private rooms, often with a pool, concentrated around Padang Padang, Bingin and Suluban. Social and cheap, with thin walls.
  • Homestays and guesthouses. Family-run rooms along Labuan Sait and in Bingin and Balangan, with fan or air conditioning and often breakfast. Basic cliff homes can have unreliable Wi-Fi or power, as one 2025 guide warns.
  • Boutique hotels and pool villas. The largest group and the signature stay: one to four bedroom villas and 10 to 30 room hotels, most with a private or shared pool. Our guide to villas in Bali covers staffed versus unstaffed and what to check.
  • Clifftop resorts. Large, full-service and designed around the drop: Alila Villas Uluwatu and Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort are two examples, with Bvlgari Resort Bali, Karma Kandara and The Ungasan among the Ungasan names. Expect infinity pools, spas and lifts or buggies, and a price to match.

What Uluwatu Hotels Cost

Approximate nightly rates as of October 2026, before the roughly 21% tax and service that hotels and villa complexes commonly add. Ranges blend several 2026 guides, and the top rows rest on one list of “from” rates, so treat them as a guide to scale, not a quote.

Type Nightly, from Notes
Hostel or surf camp dorm bed IDR 100,000–250,000 (~USD 6–16) Pool, private rooms often available
Homestay or guesthouse room IDR 300,000–700,000 (~USD 18–43) Fan or air conditioning, breakfast sometimes
Mid-range hotel or villa room IDR 1,000,000–2,500,000 (~USD 61–154) Pool; Balangan picks start near IDR 1,300,000 (~USD 80)
Upscale cliff villa or boutique hotel IDR 2,500,000–10,500,000 (~USD 154–644) Bingin, Padang Padang and Suluban picks
Luxury clifftop resort IDR 17,000,000+ (~USD 1,043+) Ungasan; some Suluban resorts reach IDR 16,900,000 (~USD 1,037)

Position drives the price more than room size: the cliff edge costs most, the beach-stair villages sit in the middle, and inland Pecatu is cheapest in exchange for a 15 to 20 minute ride to any sand. Add transport to your sums, and see the Bali trip budget for the rest of the trip. A scooter or a car and driver can cost more per day than a dorm bed, which is why a cheap inland room is not always the saving it looks like.

When to Book Uluwatu Hotels and Seasonal Pricing

Peak is July and August, then late December to early January. Dry-season swell is also strongest from May to September, so surfers fill the beach villages then. Guides suggest booking about two to six months ahead for peak weeks, and the clifftop resorts with the fewest rooms and the best Bingin and Suluban stays go first. Shoulder months are May, June and September, with similar weather to peak and fewer people; April and October are also quiet. Our month-by-month Bali weather and crowds guide has the island picture.

The wet season, roughly November to March, is the cheapest time, with rates well down and many villas discounting longer stays. Rain falls in short heavy bursts, the sea can be rough with strong currents in January and February, and one guide reports more debris washing ashore. Late December to early January is the exception: it is the busiest and priciest stretch of the wet season. Check Nyepi too. In 2027 the Day of Silence falls on 8 March, and the whole island, including Uluwatu, stays indoors; what shuts down on Nyepi covers the airport closure.

Booking-Time Practicalities in Uluwatu

These rarely show in a star rating:

  • Stairs and luggage. Many Bingin and Suluban stays are reached by steep, narrow stairs or a cliff path, which guides call hard with luggage or limited mobility. Ask how many steps from the road to the room, whether a porter or buggy is included, and whether a car can reach the gate. Some resorts supply a lift or buggy, but a villa photo will not tell you.
  • Bingin after the demolitions. On 21 July 2025 the Bali provincial government demolished about 48 structures on the Bingin cliff, which an earlier report said included newer cliffside hotels and homestays. The beach stayed open, and Badung authorities announced a staged redevelopment in May 2026 with a wider stairway, toilets and showers. Reports disagree on when building starts (one says mid-2026, another June or July 2027), and one article says hotels near Bingin saw heavy cancellations. Check recent reviews, ask the host whether the property was affected, and expect rubble and building noise.
  • Tide and the beach below. Do not assume sand at your door at any time of day. Suluban’s beach mostly disappears at mid and high tide, and rising swell makes cliff-base rocks dangerous. Our surf break comparison explains which breaks work at which tide.
  • Night noise. Single Fin on Sunday sunsets, the Padang Padang strip and the Pecatu cliff clubs all carry. Our Bali nightlife and beach club guide lists the venues, so pick a room away from the one you do not want to hear. Roosters and early ceremonies carry everywhere.
  • Ride-app pickup limits. Local groups restrict Grab and Gojek pickups at Padang Padang, Bingin, Melasti, Nyang Nyang and the Single Fin and Suluban area. Drop-offs are generally fine. The usual fix is to walk 5 to 15 minutes uphill and set your pin there, which is hard to do with a suitcase, so ask your host to arrange the transfer.
  • Meals and supplies. Guides describe Melasti and parts of Pecatu as having few amenities nearby. Ask about breakfast, a kitchen and the nearest food before choosing a remote villa.

Getting to Uluwatu and Around

Uluwatu is roughly 20 to 25 km (12 to 16 miles) from Ngurah Rai Airport. The drive takes 40 to 55 minutes on a clear run and up to an hour and a half in sunset traffic. Airport taxi-counter quotes run about IDR 300,000 to 450,000 (~USD 18 to 28), and pre-booked hotel or villa pickups are commonly in the same range, which beats hunting for a ride app pickup spot after a long flight. Landing between 4pm and 6pm adds time.

Nothing links the areas on foot. Most visitors rent a scooter, around IDR 60,000 to 150,000 (~USD 4 to 10) a day, but riding legally needs your home licence plus an International Driving Permit, and our scooter rental rules and checks cover the paperwork and the latest legal status. Roads are steep, narrow and often without footpaths, so a US driver used to sidewalks and wide shoulders should be honest about their comfort. Without a scooter, hire a car and driver for the day, commonly IDR 600,000 to 1,100,000 (~USD 37 to 68), and use Grab or Gojek for short rides away from the restricted spots. Pickup spots and fares for the whole island are in that same transport guide.
