Things to Do in Uluwatu
The best things to do in Uluwatu are Uluwatu Temple, the Kecak fire dance at sunset, the cliff beaches below the Bukit Peninsula and watching the surf from the clifftops. Uluwatu sits at the southwest tip of Bali, about 40 to 55 minutes from the airport by car. Temple entry is IDR 60,000 (~USD 4) for foreign adults and the Kecak ticket is a separate IDR 150,000 (~USD 10), both as of October 2026. Most beaches here are reached down long stairs and are surf beaches, not swimming beaches, so the tide decides which one is worth the walk.
Two things trip up first-timers. The Kecak ticket does not include temple entry, and counters reportedly take cash or QRIS but not foreign cards, so bring rupiah (the QRIS guide explains the local wallet system). Roads are also thin: there is no public transport, and getting back after sunset takes a plan, which is covered below.
Uluwatu at a Glance: What to Do and When
Costs are reported ranges as of October 2026. Beach fees in particular differ between guides because villages run many of the gates, so confirm at the booth.
| Activity | Best time | Cost | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uluwatu Temple | 3:30 to 5:30pm | IDR 60,000 (~USD 4) foreign adult | Macaques snatch loose items |
| Kecak fire dance | 6pm show, gate about 4pm | IDR 150,000 (~USD 10) adult | Sells out in peak season; sun in your eyes early on |
| Padang Padang | Before 9am, low tide | About IDR 15,000 (~USD 1) | About 120 steps; crowded by mid-morning |
| Suluban and Blue Point | Low tide | Parking IDR 5,000 to 10,000 (~USD 0.60) | The beach mostly vanishes at mid and high tide |
| Dreamland or Melasti | Midday to sunset | Free to about IDR 15,000 (~USD 1) | Weekend day-tripper crowds |
| Nyang Nyang | Mid tide, daylight only | Donation to IDR 12,000 (~USD 1) | 15 to 30 minutes down, no facilities |
| Surf viewing | Dry season, tide-dependent | Free from the cliffs | Stay off the rocks at the base |
Uluwatu Temple: Hours, Tickets and the Monkeys
Pura Luhur Uluwatu is a Balinese Hindu sea temple perched on a cliff about 70 metres above the Indian Ocean, dedicated to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa in the form of Rudra. Visitors use the public cliff-edge paths and viewing points; the inner shrines are for worshippers, so expect to look rather than enter. Uluwatu Temple is open daily from about 7am to 7pm (check before visiting, since ceremonies can close areas).
- Entry. IDR 60,000 (~USD 4) for foreign adults and IDR 40,000 (~USD 2.50) for children aged 4 to 12, as of 2026. Several guides still print the older IDR 50,000 (~USD 3) figure, but fees were reported raised from January 2026.
- Sarong. A sarong and sash come with entry, so you do not need to bring your own. The temple etiquette notes cover what to wear.
- Payment and parking. Counters reportedly take cash and QRIS, not international cards. Parking is about IDR 2,000 (~USD 0.15) for a scooter and IDR 4,000 (~USD 0.25) for a car as reported.
- Time needed. One hour to walk the cliff paths, longer if you stay for the Kecak.
- Levy checkpoint. The temple is among the sites named in official notices for the provincial tourist levy, so have your proof ready; how the levy is paid and checked has the detail.
The monkeys. The long-tailed macaques here are wild and quick. They go for sunglasses, hats, phones, water bottles and anything visible in a mesh pocket. Zip everything into a closed bag, do not carry food, and do not feed, touch or chase them. If one takes something, stay calm and ask temple staff for help instead of chasing it. Drones are a separate matter: the drone rules describe a protective buffer around Uluwatu.
Kecak Fire Dance at Uluwatu: Time, Ticket and Where to Sit
The Kecak is a Ramayana-based performance in which a seated chorus of men chants rhythmically with no instruments while dancers act out the story, ending around a fire. It is held in an open amphitheatre on the cliff beside the temple. The show is normally once a day at 6pm and runs about an hour, with no intermission.
- Tickets. IDR 150,000 (~USD 10) for adults and IDR 75,000 (~USD 5) for children, as of 2026. Temple entry is not included, so budget for both. Resellers list the show from about IDR 130,000 (~USD 8), which is only worth it if you confirm the listing is not a different product.
- When to arrive. The performance area opens around 4pm, and most guides suggest being at the temple by 4 to 5pm. Seating is first come, first served. The top-centre rows give the widest view, while the front rows put you in smoke and heat.
- Sunset. Sunset falls roughly between 5:45pm and 6:30pm through the year, so the early minutes of the 6pm show can face you into the sun. The upper and right-hand rows are reported to get shade first.
- Extra shows. A second show at 7pm has run during busy holiday periods, as reported by Antara News in April 2024. Each session reportedly holds about 1,000 people, which is why peak-season dates sell out.
- Two troupes (as reported). One 2026 guide says the Kecak Karang Boma troupe performs Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and the Sekaa Tari Kecak Uluwatu troupe performs Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, with box offices opening about 4:30pm and 5pm. We found this in only one place, so treat the days as unconfirmed.
- Rain. Light rain usually does not stop it, though the fire segment may be skipped. Heavy rain can cancel it. One guide reports the show does not run on Nyepi or the day before; see what shuts down on Nyepi.
Uluwatu Cliff Beaches: Which One for What
Every beach below the Bukit cliffs is reached by a staircase or ramp, and most are narrow at high tide. Pick by tide first and by activity second. The beach-by-beach breakdown of currents and access covers the rest of the island. Fees below are the ranges guides report as of October 2026; where sources disagree, the range spans them.
| Beach | Access | Entry and parking | Swimming | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Padang Padang | About 120 steps via a rock passage | About IDR 15,000 (~USD 1); parking IDR 2,000 to 5,000 (~USD 0.30) | Small cove, calmer near the shore; conditions vary by season | The cove, photos, tide pools |
| Suluban and Blue Point | Steep stairs, then a low cave path | Free; parking IDR 5,000 to 10,000 (~USD 0.60) | Not ideal; rocky and strong waves | Surf watching, low-tide cave |
| Bingin | About 190 uneven steps | Free; parking IDR 5,000 to 10,000 (~USD 0.60) | Rocky bottom, water shoes help | Surf watching, quiet after the 2025 demolitions |
| Dreamland | Flat walk from parking | Free, or an informal IDR 10,000 to 15,000 (~USD 1); parking IDR 5,000 to 20,000 (~USD 1.25) | Strong shorebreak, red flags mark no-swim zones | Sunset, loungers, beginner surf lessons |
| Melasti | Road to the sand, no stairs | About IDR 10,000 to 15,000 (~USD 1); parking IDR 2,000 to 5,000 (~USD 0.30) | Among the calmest on the peninsula | Swimming, families, beach clubs |
| Nyang Nyang | 15 to 30 minutes down a steep track | Donation to IDR 12,000 (~USD 1) | Open surf; avoid at high tide | Space, seclusion |
| Balangan | A few steps to the sand | Free; parking IDR 5,000 to 10,000 (~USD 0.60) | Exposed reef, not a swim beach | Sunset, relaxed surf viewing |
Padang Padang
Pecatu, Uluwatu · About IDR 15,000 (~USD 1) cash at the top of the stairs
A tight cove reached through a narrow rock gap, known to many US visitors as a location from the film Eat Pray Love. It is also a well-known reef break, so the water is busy with surfers when the swell is up. Low tide leaves small pools that suit kids. Macaques work the stairs and car park, so the monkey rules above apply here too. Guides say it fills by mid-morning, so arrive before 9am if you want space.
Suluban and Blue Point
Below the Single Fin cliff, Uluwatu · Free; parking IDR 5,000 to 10,000 (~USD 0.60)
The trick here is the cave. At low tide a rock passage opens from the stairs into a pocket of sand, pools and rock shelves; at mid to high tide the beach is mostly underwater. Check a tide chart, go at low tide, and wear shoes with grip. Cliff cafes above give a seat with a view if the tide is wrong.
Bingin
Bingin, Pecatu · Free; parking IDR 5,000 to 10,000 (~USD 0.60)
Bingin has changed since 2025; the section below explains what is open. Expect a steep walk of about 10 minutes down uneven steps and bring your own water.
Dreamland
Pecatu · Free to about IDR 15,000 (~USD 1)
Wide sand, flat access from the car park and the most facilities of the cliff beaches: warungs, loungers (about IDR 100,000 (~USD 6) for two chairs and an umbrella) and surf schools. The shorebreak is strong, so read the flags. It is the easiest cliff beach for people who cannot do stairs, and it gets weekend crowds.
Melasti
Ungasan · About IDR 10,000 to 15,000 (~USD 1)
The most swimmable of the Uluwatu beaches, with a road that winds down between white limestone cliffs to the sand, public showers and toilets, and beach clubs. Surfing is possible but rarely done because the waves are poor, and water shoes are sensible around the reef edges.
Nyang Nyang
Pecatu · Donation to IDR 12,000 (~USD 1)
A long, wide beach with few people, reached by a steep track that guides describe as a dirt path or a long staircase (descriptions differ). Allow 15 to 30 minutes down and longer back up. There are only a couple of drink shacks, no showers and no shade to speak of. Go in daylight at mid tide, and bring water for the climb.
Balangan
Jimbaran side of the Bukit · Free; parking IDR 5,000 to 10,000 (~USD 0.60)
The easiest cliff beach to reach, with warungs, sunbeds (around IDR 150,000 (~USD 10) a day as reported) and a cliff viewpoint on one side that works for sunset. The reef is exposed, so treat it as a place to watch surf and eat rather than swim. Two quieter options nearby are Thomas Beach (about 130 steps, mostly free) and Green Bowl (about 320 steps, small at high tide).
Bingin After the 2025 Demolitions
On 21 July 2025 the Bali provincial government demolished about 48 structures on the Bingin cliff, including bars, homestays and surf businesses, saying they stood on protected coastal land without permits. The beach itself stayed open and surfers kept using it, but the cafes and guesthouses that older guides describe are gone. Reports from mid-2026 describe rubble on the cliff, rougher access and a few vendors selling snacks. Badung authorities were reported in May 2026 to be planning a staged redevelopment with safer stairs and public toilets, with no completion date, so do not count on facilities and check recent reports before you go.
Watching the Surf at Uluwatu Without Paddling Out
Uluwatu is one of Bali’s best-known reef breaks, and watching is a real activity. The clifftop cafes above Suluban give the classic view of the surfers paddling out through the cave. Padang Padang can be seen from the bridge above the cove. In the dry season, May to September, the swell is most consistent and the lineup fullest. Tide changes what is breaking, so check a chart and plan around it. Keep off the wet rocks at the base, because rising swell at high tide can make cliff-base exits dangerous. Bali’s surf break comparison ranks the breaks by level; if you want to surf, read it before you paddle out.
Uluwatu Sunset Spots Besides the Temple
- Suluban cliff cafes. The deck-and-bar strip above the surf, including Single Fin, is the easy sunset option with a drink in hand.
- Balangan viewpoint. A cliff on one side of the beach, quieter than the temple.
- Dreamland. A west-facing beach with loungers and food.
- Karang Boma cliff. A clifftop viewpoint between the temple and Nyang Nyang. Guides report an informal fee of IDR 5,000 to 10,000 (~USD 0.60) and no safety fences, and one says it is now privately managed. Stay well back from the edge.
Traffic on the Bukit peaks between about 5pm and 8pm as everyone heads for sunset, so leave earlier than you think. Sunset is covered at the temple; at the beaches, arrive 45 minutes before it.
Uluwatu Beach Clubs: What Is Open
The clubs are covered with entry prices in the Bali nightlife guide, including Single Fin, Savaya and Sundays Beach Club. Guides updated in September 2026 also list Ulu Cliffhouse, El Kabron, Oneeighty and Karma Beach as operating. Day passes with a food and drink credit are reported at about IDR 450,000 to 700,000 (~USD 28 to 43), and some venues are free to enter with a minimum spend for daybeds. Hours and prices move, so check the venue page before you commit a day to one.
More to Do Around Uluwatu
- Spas and massage. Everyday spas on Jalan Labuansait and in Pecatu charge IDR 150,000 to 310,000 (~USD 10 to 20) for a 60-minute massage as of November 2026, and the cliff-top hotel spas charge resort prices. The Bali spa guide with prices by area lists every tier.
- Paragliding. Tandem flights launch from the cliffs near Nyang Nyang and from Timbis and Pandawa further east. A 2025 guide reported tandem prices from about IDR 900,000 to 1,500,000 (~USD 55 to 92), so confirm the operator and wind conditions.
- Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park. A park with a 121 m statue and daily dance shows, in Ungasan on the road from the airport. Its Kecak also starts at 6pm, so pick it or the temple’s for the evening. The GWK guide with tickets and show times has the details.
- Eating. Local warungs serve a meal for about IDR 20,000 to 30,000 (~USD 1.25 to 2). Cafes and restaurants in Pecatu, Suluban and Bingin run roughly IDR 55,000 to 160,000 (~USD 4 to 10) a main as listed in a June 2026 guide. For the seafood dinner many people pair with Uluwatu, see where to eat in Bali.
Uluwatu Half-Day and Full-Day Plans
The plan is built around tide and sunset, because the beaches and the Kecak are the two things you cannot move.
- Half-day (2:30pm start). Padang Padang or Suluban at low tide, a cliff cafe stop around 4pm, temple by 4:30pm, Kecak at 6pm. Book your ride back before the show.
- Full day. A beach before 9am (Padang Padang or Dreamland), lunch at a warung, Melasti or a beach club through the afternoon heat, temple at 4pm, Kecak, dinner in Pecatu.
- Quiet day. Nyang Nyang at mid tide in the morning, Balangan or Thomas for sunset, and skip the temple crowds.
The 7-day first-timer itinerary shows how Uluwatu fits with Tanah Lot on a single day.
Getting to Uluwatu and Around
From the airport the trip takes about 40 to 55 minutes, from Seminyak (see things to do in Seminyak) about 1 to 1.25 hours and from Canggu 1.25 to 1.75 hours, with peak-hour traffic adding an hour or more. The Bali getting-around comparison lists journey times and fares by route. Ride apps work to Uluwatu but pickups are restricted at some spots, including the temple, Padang Padang and Bingin as reported, and drivers cancel after sunset. The reliable fix is to hire a car and driver for the day, commonly around IDR 600,000 to 1,100,000 (~USD 37 to 68), and ask them to wait.
A scooter is the standard way to hop between beaches, around IDR 60,000 to 100,000 (~USD 4 to 6) a day. Riding legally needs a home licence with a motorcycle endorsement and an International Driving Permit, and the scooter rental rules and checks cover that and the latest legal status. Roads have steep access lanes (Nyang Nyang is the worst), potholes after rain and water trucks, so ride in daylight where you can.
What a Day in Uluwatu Costs
| Item | Cost (as of Oct 2026) |
|---|---|
| Temple plus Kecak, one adult | About IDR 210,000 (~USD 13) |
| Beach entry and parking | IDR 5,000 to 25,000 (~USD 1.50) |
| Scooter for the day | IDR 60,000 to 100,000 (~USD 6) |
| Warung meal | IDR 20,000 to 30,000 (~USD 2) |
| Cafe main | IDR 55,000 to 160,000 (~USD 10) |
| Car and driver for the day | IDR 600,000 to 1,100,000 (~USD 68) |
A scooter day with the temple, the Kecak and two beaches therefore lands around IDR 350,000 to 500,000 (~USD 22 to 31) before the beach club. The Bali trip budget shows how that sits in a whole trip.
Best Time to Visit Uluwatu
April to October is the dry season, with May to September the peak for surf and for crowds. April and October are shoulder months with fewer people. The wet season brings short heavy showers but quieter beaches. The month-by-month Bali weather and crowds guide has the island-wide picture. Pack water shoes, a sun layer and a dry bag; the packing list covers it.
